Join us for a “Black in America 2″ Viewing Party on July 22 and 23, 2009

Dear Friends of The Brothers Network,

Have we truly entered a new era in American race relations with the
advent of the Age of Obama? Or is it simply that, as the old French
proverb goes, “the more things change, the more they stay the same”?

Last year, CNN explored the continuing contradictions of race in
America in its documentary series “Black in America.” On Tuesday, July
22, and Wednesday, July 23, please join us for a viewing and
discussion as CNN revisits the subject with “Black in America 2.”

We will meet at Cafe Mocha, 263 South 10th Street, Philadelphia, Pa.,
to watch the two-part program in a comfortable environment.
Afterwards, you are welcome to stay and discuss the issues raised in
each installment.

Light snacks will be provided. We will gather starting at 7:30 p.m.

Please RSVP by replying to thebrothersnetwork@gmail.com

Pease pass this invitaion along to your network.

We look forward to seeing you there.

TMAN Dirt Bike & Camping Adventure in Central PA 8/28-8/30

Howie spoke to Denny at Willow Hill Camp & Trail and he is willing to knock $15 off each person’s fee since we’re a group of at least 6.  That means $85 per person for the 4-5 hour dirt bike lesson.  That includes a loaner bike and helmet.  He only has 6 loaner bikes, but if more than 6 want to sign up he’s willing to run two back-to-back sessions of 4 people.  Refund policy is:  If you cancel 7 days prior to 8/29 you get a full refund on your deposit.  If you cancel less than 7 days prior to 8/29 he won’t give you a refund on your deposit, but you can reschedule to take another class with him at another time.  He needs a $40 deposit to hold your spot.  I would like to collect checks made out to “Dennis Mann” at our 7/27 meeting, or you can give me cash and I’ll send a check in for you.  If you can’t make that meeting, please e-mail me and I’ll arrange to get it another way.  Camping is “primitive.”  He said it’s a beautiful setting with a river.  There are port-o-potties and fire rings.  Firewood and water available in office.  Grocery store within 5 miles.  $20/site.  So if we do 4 to a tent, that’s just $5 each.  Check out the following website for a breakdown of the Motorcycle Safety Federation’s course, which is what we’ll be doing: http://www.dirtbikeschool.com/.  There’s a good short video on the website of what to expect in our class.  This is gonna be fun!  We’ll leave Philly Friday evening and depart from the campsite Sunday morning.  As of now, I have the following people down as going:

G
Lonnie
Leo
Chris
Robbie
Howie
Aquila
Shawn

If your name is missing from this list, please let Howie know!

IMPORTANT:  ASAP (by end of tomorrow, July 22nd at the latest), please register for our dirt bike class at Willow Hill at the following:  https://training.msf-usa.org/RES/dbs/enroll/StudentEntry.aspx?tuid=ZU%2fpLNIs%2fvH2Lv%2f7htHJxg%3d%3d

He needs everyone to register online in order to save our spots in the class.

Remember that you will be responsible for bringing the following:  long pants, long sleeved shirt, over-the-ankle-boots, gloves, and safety glasses.  He has helmets to loan us.

I need to collect a $40 deposit next Monday at our meeting.  You can give me cash or check.  I will then send in all of our deposits together.  Then, you’ll need to give him the rest of the fee ($45) on the 29th.

Second camping trip of the summer, this time with dirt biking!

TMAN is camping again one last time for this season.  We’ll be headed to Central PA 2.5 from Philly to Willow Hill Camp and Trail from Friday, August 21st to August 23rd.  The all-day dirt biking lesson is $100, and $20/night to camp.  Bring cash, no credit cards accepted.    If there is enough interest, we may be able to secure a group discount. You will need lunch, safety glasses, long pants, long sleeve shirt, over the ankle boots, and gloves.  They can provide a helmet.  The lesson is 5 hours in length with a 30 minute lunch break in the middle. You can visit the campsite and dirt biking website by clicking here.  If you’re interested, please get back to Howie ASAP by emailing him here.

Sign the Petition to Oppose SEPTA’s Gender Policing

Dear Liberty City member,
SEPTA’s policy of requiring M and F stickers on weekly and monthly passes is discriminatory, and General Manager Joe Casey has the power to change that policy and end that discrimination. Can you sign a petition urging him to do what’s right?
Sign here:
This policy hurts real Philadelphians every day. It causes harassment to gender non-conforming people, creates a safety risk by alerting other passengers to a rider’s difference, and creates an economic hardship for passengers who are denied use of their pass and are forced to pay additional fare.

TMAN is going to ATL

We are trying to solidify our plans to travel across country this fall.
Event: Atlanta Black Pride
Location: Hotlanta, GA
Date leaving Philly: September 3, 2009
Date returning to Philly: September 8, 2009
Total Amount needed for trip (includes: transport to and from, transport during events, hotel stay): $175*

Main Contact:
Please contact Lonnie by Tues, June 23, 2009 if you are interested (this is not a confirmation, just want to know how many people are interested).

*you will be responsible for your own food, activities, peep shows and souvenirs

PTHC This Week!

The Philadelphia Trans Health Conference is next week! We are excited to present the first ever People of Color Track this year.

Last year we asked what our community needed. This year would like to mark some of those items off as accomplished, chip away at others and add new ones to the list.

Below you will find the final list of workshops presented this year with the track as well as other general workshops presented by people of color. Please continue to spread the word as we depend on your attendance and participation to make this a successful event.
