SOFFA support group

We are happy and excited to offer a new group in Philadelphia that addresses the concerns and needs of an often underserved population. “Just For Us” is a therapy group for partners of transgendered and gendervariant individuals. We aim to create a safe space where clients can find the support, camaraderie, and information to thrive. This group often goes unnoticed with the focus primarily on the trans person.
Here, partners will have the opportunity to carve out an identity of their very own. Partners may be male, female, gender-variant, gay, straight, queer, or bisexual…the only thing they must be is the current partner of a transgender or gender-variant person.

We invite you to spread the word and hang up the flyer (make copies if you need more!) and welcome any questions you may have about referring potential clients to us. We are excited about this group and appreciate your support!

Best Wishes,

ATL Black Pride – TMAN Workshops

TMAN continues on our mission to enlighten about  trans issues from a special POC angle and for everyone to pass the word to their social networks to help support.

Workshops start at 3pm on Saturday and run back to back.

Transmen and Butches: What Separates Us?!?!

There exists an inexplicable division between Transmen and Lesbians of color. In this workshop we will seek to get at the Crux of this divide, hash out the factors that cause separation, investigate the current social environment that feeds it and triumphantly emerge with solutions and strategies for change. Studs, Bois, Aggressives, Butches, So ft-Butches, and all masculinized female–identified people requested to attend, to help inform the conversation. Those preferring an androgynous appearance are likewise invited to the table. Honest and unflinching dialogue of a frank nature will be featured throughout this session. Overwhelmingly, Transgender men of Color report that they feel kinship with many masculinized female identities. In fact, many transmen report that they had at one time or another in their own lives, identified as butch. During this workshop, these same transmen will be challenged by discussion about their lives pre and post transition. We will probe sensitive areas where we ask difficult questions of transmen like “how does it feel to be a seen as a man in society?”, “how does it feel to be largely unrecognizable to your former peers?”, “what does it feel like to be placed mostly into straight spaces and ousted from formerly safe and comfortable lesbian ones?”. Butches, femmes and all attendees will be also put to task about their experiences and opinions. The phenomenon known as “dyke-flight” where the Lesbian community reports seeing more and more lesbians20transitioning into men, will be spotlighted. Highlights will include discussion about why many long-time lesbian relationships do not survive when challenged by the transition of one partner from female to male. We will continue by investigating the myriad of ways in which gender is and has historically been experienced and expressed in Lesbian and Transmasculine communities of color and how those experiences affect our present-day relationships.

TRANS  101

The focus of the workshop is to provide a starting point for Lesbians, Gays, Bisexuals and all allies to become more informed about Transgender identities. Transgender people started the Stonewall Riots of 1969. That single act sparked a revolution that has resulted in the “Gay Rights” movement that is ongoing today. Yet for their integral part in bringing attention to the quality of life needs of LGBT people, transgender people often find themselves left out of the Equal ity conversation. This workshop will give Pride attendees the space to discuss their understanding of transgender beings, along with their overall understanding of gender and sexuality. This lively and interactive session will involve participants in an in-depth dialogue regarding the varied types of gender identities. Attendees should expect to learn more about identifying transphobia and heterosexism. Participants will be gaining knowledge of how to facilitate inclusive and safe environments that value and support all. Participants will leave better able to interrupt prejudice and create change. This frank and thought-provoking discussion – where nothing is taboo – will result in new dialogue, new terminology and ultimately new relationships. We will cover gender, sexuality, identity and interestingly we’ll be able to see where these converge and separate. A panel of Transgend er men of color will be available to talk about their lives and experiences. Calling all Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender people! All are welcome. We eagerly await hearing about your experiences, and fielding your questions and comments. This training is aimed at challenging and educating Pride attendees on Transgender lives.
