The Philadelphia Trans Health Conference is next week! We are excited to present the first ever People of Color Track this year.

Last year we asked what our community needed. This year would like to mark some of those items off as accomplished, chip away at others and add new ones to the list.

Below you will find the final list of workshops presented this year with the track as well as other general workshops presented by people of color. Please continue to spread the word as we depend on your attendance and participation to make this a successful event.

Below is a list of workshops that will take place during the PTHC this year. We are still looking for volunteers to help out with handing out and collecting evaluation forms during the POC workshops. Please let Lonnie or Leo know if you are interested in this volunteer opportunity and spread the word about this conference.

This is Lonnie and Leo of TMAN Philadelphia. We are excited to announce the first ever People of Color track at this year’s Philaelphia Trans Health Conference. We believe that with your help we have created a cohesive and representative track which speaks to some of the needs we all discussed at last year’s conference.

Now that the workshops and events are in place, we will need your help to make it a success. Please spread the word! The conference is only a month away and we would like to see everyone there and more.

Conference Highlights:

Keynote addresses by: Lisa O’Conner, M.D. (Thursday) & Julia Serano (Friday).

2nd Annual Job Fair with over 15 local, regional and national organizations, companies and businesses looking to hire trans/gender variant people.

2nd annual Film Fiesta featuring seven amazing films about the trans/gender variant experience. Films include; “against the trans narrative,” “Still Black: A Portrait of Black Transmen,” “TRANSforming Healthcare,” “Red Without Blue,” “How Do I Look,” and “The Bond.”

Over 90 Community Day & 32 Provider Day workshops!

Over 6 Continuing Education and Medical Education Units available to Provider Day attendees.

Over 30 trans-inclusive non-profit and for-profit vendors.

Free healthcare related clinics: HIV testing, chest and breast exams, dental exams, and more.

Over fifteen Meet and Greets!

PTHC’s annual Saturday night after-party, Blender, featuring 4 hours of dancing and numerous local and national trans and queer identified musical acts.

Thursday, June 11 is Providers Day which has programming geared toward medical, mental health, and social service providers.
CEUs and CME are available.

Registration fees for Providers Day are:
$150 – Providers with CME/CEUs
$ 75 – Providers without CME/CEUs
$ 25 – Students and non-providers
$ 15 – Families and visitors

Friday/Saturday, June 12 and 13 are Community Days which have programming that is of interest to Trans communities and their allies.
Community Days are FREE

Online registration for both Providers Day and Community Days is strongly encouraged.
Only those who pre-register before April 30, 2009 are guaranteed to receive a PTHC program book.

TMAN’s Relationship with Philadelphia Trans-Health Conference

Dear friends this is Lonnie and Leo of TMAN Philadelphia.

We are contacting you personally about a very exciting venture that TMAN has taken a leadership role with for the 2009 Philadelphia Transhealth Conference (PTHC) from June 11th – 13th.

PTHC is usually broken down into “tracks” which workshops or activities with specific focus, like family, youth, religion, etc. The tracks allow for more than one workshop/activity of focus to be held on each day of the conference. We have advocated for and have been given the go-ahead to assist in organizing the People of Color track. Next year will be the first year of its existence and we hope to see this track flourish in the future.

At this time we would like to reach out to all single or group facilitators who may be interested in taking part in this historical effort. We are asking for your support in a couple of ways so please choose one today:

1. Propose a workshop you want to facilitate. (Need help getting it down on paper? Call 215-834- 9063, leave a message we’ll call back).

2. Propose a workshop idea that someone else can facilitate.

3. Propose an activity you would like to be included.

4. Any other way you can think of to support.

Last year’s attendance of POC at the PTHC was record breaking. We expect an even bigger turnout this year. As such, we want the workshops to speak to our varied and special needs. We are asking our community to help us organize the best planning possible for our people. The following is a list of possible workshop topics. If you have any interest in proposing a workshop in any of the specified areas, please indicate that in your response:

A. POC top surgery, binding show & tell with discussion.
B. POC Genderqueer
C. POC mental health / nutrition

D. POC partners discussion
E. POC general caucus (TMAN to facilitate)
F. POC Transwomen Networking event

G. POC Trans & HIV

Youth:

A. An interractive history of drag ball culture (tie in w/ film: How Do I Look)
B. POC Trans in school & college
C. POC dating for trans youth

We are asking for input for Providers Day workshop ideas and social activities as well.

The PTHC is a completely free conference (except provider day). There is an opportunity for travel scholarships in the amount of $100. We have attached the following forms to submit:

The deadline for submitting workshops is January 15, 2009. Please do not be discouraged by the due date. Even if you have an idea that you anticipate finalizing by June but may need assistance in getting the proposal in on time, please let us know as soon as possible.
